Festival of colors celebrating the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring.
Celebrates the divine love of Radha and Krishna, and the burning of Holika.
Holi, the festival of colors, celebrates the eternal love between Lord Krishna and Radha, and marks the victory of good over evil through the story of Prahlad and Holika. According to legend, the demon king Hiranyakashipu wanted everyone to worship him, but his son Prahlad remained devoted to Lord Vishnu. Enraged, the king asked his sister Holika, who was immune to fire, to sit in a pyre with Prahlad. However, due to divine intervention, Holika burned while Prahlad emerged unharmed. The night before Holi, bonfires are lit to commemorate this event. The next day, people celebrate with colors, remembering how Krishna playfully colored Radha and the gopis. This joyous festival signifies the arrival of spring, the blossoming of love, and the triumph of devotion over evil.
On the eve of Holi, a bonfire is lit in the evening to symbolize the burning of evil and negativity. People gather around the fire, perform puja, and offer prayers. Coconuts and grains are offered to the fire as a symbol of gratitude for a good harvest.
The main day of Holi is celebrated by playing with vibrant colored powders (gulal) and water. People smear colors on each other, dance to traditional songs, and spread joy. This represents the colorful love of Radha and Krishna.
Folk songs, dhol beats, and traditional dances like the Raas Leela are performed. People sing Holi songs and bhajans dedicated to Lord Krishna, creating a festive and devotional atmosphere.
Special delicacies like gujiya, malpua, thandai, and other sweets are prepared and shared with family and friends. The traditional drink thandai, often infused with bhang, is consumed as part of the celebration.
