Celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman, the devoted follower of Lord Rama.
Honors Hanuman's strength, devotion, and selfless service.
Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman, the epitome of devotion, strength, and selfless service. Born to Anjana and Kesari with the blessings of Lord Vayu (the wind god), Hanuman is considered an incarnation of Lord Shiva. From childhood, Hanuman displayed extraordinary powers - he once leaped toward the sun thinking it was a fruit. His unwavering devotion to Lord Rama is legendary. During the search for Sita, Hanuman crossed the ocean to Lanka, found Sita, and later brought the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshmana's life. His strength, wisdom, and complete surrender to Rama make him the ideal devotee. Hanuman is worshipped for courage, strength, protection from evil, and the removal of obstacles. His devotees believe that sincere worship of Hanuman brings success, good health, and spiritual progress.
The 40-verse prayer composed by Tulsidas is recited multiple times throughout the day. Many devotees recite it 11, 21, or 108 times. The Chalisa praises Hanuman's virtues and seeks his blessings for strength and protection.
Devotees apply vermillion (sindoor) to Hanuman's idol as it is believed to be his favorite offering. According to legend, when Sita applied sindoor for Rama's long life, Hanuman covered his entire body with it to ensure Rama's immortality.
The idol is bathed with panchamrit (mixture of milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and sugar), followed by water and sandalwood paste. Flowers, especially red flowers and marigolds, are offered in abundance.
Special prasad including besan laddoos, bananas, and other sweets are prepared and distributed. It is believed that Hanuman loves besan laddoos, and offering them brings his blessings.
